About Our Virginia Peanuts

My name is Sam Pope and I live in Southampton County, Virginia where Virginia type peanuts have been grown since the 1700’s. Slaves from Africa are believed to have brought the first peanut seed to Southeastern Virginia in the 1600’s.  It did not take but about fifty years for the early settlers to realize that because of its soils and climate Southampton County would become the home of the highest quality peanuts grown anywhere in the world.

Being a fourth generation peanut farmer in Southeast Virginia, I have seen the peanut industry change tremendously.  One thing that has not changed is our ability to produce the largest and brightest hulled peanuts in the world. We have also enjoyed the local peanut recipes that have been handed down for generations.  Only recently have these peanuts and peanut candies been available to the public by way of the internet.

Also science has finely confirmed what all of us in peanut country already knew and that is that peanuts are the ultimate healthy snack.  New research funded by The Peanut Institute and conducted by a team of scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows that peanuts are another rich dietary source of heart-healthy resveratrol. Recent studies on this plant compound found in red wine and grapes show that resveratrol may help reduce the risks of heart disease and cancer. This new USDA research appears to support epidemiological studies that show nuts may reduce the risk of heart disease by more than half when eaten frequently in small amounts.

With the advent of the internet these delicious healthy nuts are now available to everyone around the world with only a few clicks on our advertisers pages. Visit some of our advertisers at:
